One email domain being stwo exchange servers?

We currently have a NT domain with Exchange 5.5. We have looked into upgrading our domain before but the license cost was always a brick wall. We are now investigating a staggered migration.
What we are looking at doing is setting up a new domain

Have you considered exmerge? It might be your easiest route to E2007.

You're in for a lot of work. You need Active Directory to go anywhere
and since you have 5.5 you can't go beyond 2003 unless you make the
break with what you have and move to a completely fresh infrastructure
- which probably wouldn't be a bad idea anyway.

This is not the right medium to be going through fundamentally basic
IT steps that most of us left behind nine years ago. I would suggest
that you get a consultancy in to talk through your options.

Hi Stuart,

If you want to migrate from 5.5 > 2007, then you'll have to have a temporary
server that'll sit in the middle to facilitate this. It's not an issue if
you've got either a load of kit - or if you're going to be running a virtual
environment.

I'd never really do an in place upgrade of any exchange server (you can't
with 2007 onwards anyway).

Without going into too much detail.... and apologies if I miss any steps.

First things first - you need to upgrade your domain to Active Directory.

You will have to have at least one 2003 DC - and make it a global catalog.

Install an active directory connector that'll sync between the Exchange &
Active Directory environment.

Install Exchange 2003 on a new server - and move the mailboxes to that box,
test everything - move public folders etc... then decommission the old 5.5
box.

Then install a new 2007/2010 box, and move all the mailboxes and Public
folders to that.

There are loads of guides on exactly how to do this that go into loads more
detail - msexchange.org is a good start.

The easiest route really depends on the number of mailboxes and complexity
of your windows environment. - As Lanwench says - it might be better to just
ignore the 'book' way of doing it - and exporting - clean installing then
importing due to the requirement of loads of hardware (and time).
