The gray icon just means that you have some 3rd party application that isn't
playing nice with Outlook. You have to find that 3rd party application and
update (or uninstall) it so that Outlook works better.

Good Morning, and thanks in advance for your help!!
I found another thread talking about that grey icon that appears and
stays shortly after shutting Outlook 2007 down.
For my machine, it shows, and about 50% of the time it does not go
away, and while it is present, Outlook 2007 will not open.
Outlook shows in the Task Manager when this happens.
If I end process on Outlook from the task manager, the icon will
disappear when I hover over it.
Once the process is ended in Task Manager, then I am able to open
Outlook.
Windows XP SP3, Outlook 2007 (office 2k7 pro)
